Made in Vienna

A shopping guide to the city’s makers, from imperial glass to hand-blocked hats.

Many of Vienna’s best shops still make what they sell, several are run by the families who founded them, and a surprising number still produce designs drawn more than a century ago.

That is what to look for here. Vienna has every international label you could want, but the things worth carrying home are always the ones you can’t buy anywhere else.

Glass, Porcelain and Silver

J. & L. Lobmeyr
Founded in 1823 and led by the same family for six generations, Lobmeyr worked with Edison’s company to light Vienna’s first electric chandeliers in 1882. Its chandeliers hang in the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hoffmann’s B-series drinking glasses, still made from his original sketches, are in the the small glass museum upstairs.

Augarten Porcelain
Augarten traces its roots to 1718, which makes it the second porcelain manufactory established in Europe, after Meissen. The flagship near the Graben has a ceiling made of porcelain shards. Its shelves hold Hoffmann’s Melon service and Moser’s Bird Colony tea service, alongside the classic Viennese Rose - the designs are just as vibrant today.

Wiener Silber Manufactur
A few doors along the same street, this silversmith continues Vienna’s tradition of fine table silver. Its pieces include flatware and dishes based on Hoffmann’s designs, alongside contemporary objects. A Hoffmann teaspoon is a small, perfect souvenir of the Werkstätte years.

To Wear and Carry

Mühlbauer
Hats have been made by hand here since 1903, the same year the Werkstätte was founded, and the fourth generation of the family now runs the business. The collections run from classic felts to caps and hair bands, and a well-made Viennese hat is as practical as it is handsome.

R. Horn’s
Robert Horn’s leather goods follow a simple rule, form follows function, drawn straight from Vienna’s modernist past. The best-known piece is the Thomas Mann briefcase, inspired by a photograph of the writer. About ten craftspeople work the leather by hand, and bespoke commissions are welcome.

Wilhelm Jungmann & Neffe
A fabric house since 1866 and supplier to the imperial court from 1881, Jungmann & Neffe sells fine cloth for suits, coats and furnishings from an interior that still feels like the age of the Ringstraße. Choose a length of cloth here and have it made up by your tailor at home.

Demel

Altmann & Kühne
Since 1928, this chocolatier on the Graben has sold handmade chocolates in boxes designed in the Wiener Werkstätte style, and the listed modernist shopfront is worth a look in itself. The boxes are as much of a keepsake as what is inside.

Julius Meinl am Graben
The Meinl name has been part of Viennese life since 1862, and its delicatessen has stood on the Graben since 1955, with more than 17,000 products across two floors. Come for coffee, preserves and teas, or a hamper assembled to order.
